FCU

Important Dates

The FCU try out camp on November 6-8 was a huge success! Dennis McComb and John Magnusson evaluated forty applicants for the 2010 FCU Umpire Staff at Lynn University and Palm Beach State College. It looks like FCU will accept at least fifteen new umpires directly from the camp. Our thanks to Manny Salazar for holding this three man camp in South Florida and allowing us to evaluate potential umpires. Manny also utilized other FCU umpires as instructors: John Connacher, Jeff Cox, Cory Gottsegen, A.J. Lostaglio, Joe Judkowitz, Olindo Mattia, and Marcial Santos. Jim Cowen and Dave Meyer also helped coordinate. Many thanks to these fine umpires.

The season is getting closer and we will be putting umpires' names in the slots this weekend (12/11-13) . All FCU umpires need to be sure they have entered their blocked dates in their calendars. Check your profile and put your photo in the web site.

January 16, 2010, NCAA Clinic in Atlanta, Grand Hyatt Hotel, required for post season NCAA umpires and assorted NCAA conference umpires, not required by FCU.

IN MEMORIAM

Peter YellenPeter Yellen, 58, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2007. Robin, Peter’s wife, held a celebration of Peter’s life in January 2008 in St. Petersburg. Peter is survived by his wife, Robin, and his children Jennifer, Adam and Katie.

Peter was a founding father of Florida Collegiate Umpires. He along with Mike Kiernan and John Magnusson founded FCU in 1990. Peter eventually retired from umpiring and sold his share of the business to Dennis McComb. FCU will enshrine Peter into their inaugural FCU Hall of Fame.

Peter helped pioneer using computers to schedule college baseball umpires. He became Supervisor of Umpires for the Sunshine State Conference and also worked the Division 2 World Series in Montgomery. Peter was a member of the Conference USA umpiring staff. He also worked the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, CO.

Peter was known for his calm demeanor and his ability to use humor to becalm coaches and players.  He was well respected nationwide as an umpire. He never raised his voice to control the participants but used his intelligence to reason with them.

He was also known for his excellent golf game and his baking talents. In the last year, Peter returned to umpire with his high school group in the St. Petersburg area. His smile will be missed by umpires and coaches across Florida and the nation.
